Middle School Eligibility

  • Sixth graders may not enter as soloists.
  • Sixth graders may participate in ensembles that include seventh and eighth grade students.
  • Seventh and eighth grade students may participate as soloists, receiving either a final determination or comments only, with district allowance and director request.
  • Seventh and eighth grade students may participate in ensembles for ratings or comments only.

Performance

  • To be eligible for a Final Determination, each event is required to sing two selections of contrasting character. Popular, show tune, vocal jazz, barbershop, or novelty selections are not to be sung. Choreography is not allowed.
  • Original copies of each selection must be provided to the adjudicator, with all measure clearly numbered. Failure to do so will disqualify the event from receiving a final determination. The event will be allowed to perform for comments only.
  • A second original copy of each selection must be in the room for the accompanist. The accompanist may use duplicated music, but must have the second original copy at the piano. Failure to do so will disqualify the event from receiving a final determination. The event will be allowed to perform for comments only. 
  • Use of illegally duplicated copies will disqualify the event from receiving a final determination. The event will be allowed to perform for comments only.
  • When performing music requiring accompaniment, live accompaniment must be used unless it is avant garde or 21st century music requiring electronic or taped accompaniment as part of the composer’s compositional and performance intent.

Requirements for Soloists

  • Soloists must choose one selection from the Approved Solo Repertoire List.
  • Soloists MUST perform from memory
  • Soloists will be allotted a minimum of 15 minutes which includes entry and exit to and from the performance room, as well as time for oral comments from the adjudicator

Requirements for Ensembles

  • An ensemble can include as few as two (2) singers but not more than twenty (20) singers to be eligible for a final determination.
  • Ensembles may use scores or perform from memory
  • The personnel of an ensemble cannot change between selections
  • Ensembles will be allotted a minimum of 15 minutes which includes entry and exit to and from the performance room, as well as time for oral comments from the adjudicator

Good (2)        23-18          
Fair (3)        17-12
